1. It was established in 1975
Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. At that time, they were both students; Gates at Harvard and Allen at Washington State University. They were both proficient in computer programming and dreamed of building new computer systems. Originally, the company was called Micro-Soft and was a name suggested by Paul Allen. This makes sense as it is a combination of the abbreviations for microcomputer and software. However, in 1981, he decided to remove the hyphen from his company name and call it Microsoft. He founded the company in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but the company had moved to Bellevue, Washington by 1979. It was not until 1986 that the company moved to Redmond, Washington, which is now the headquarters of Microsoft. The company has had many logos over the years. In the original logo, the 'O' was stylized and given the name 'Blibet', which was also the name of a burger once sold in Microsoft cafeterias. The current 'Pac-Man' logo has been in use since 1987.
2. Gates and Allen had already established a business
Before founding Microsoft, Gates and Allen had already shown their entrepreneurial skills and founded another company. He designed a computer system that automatically processed traffic count data. The objective was to read the raw data generated by road traffic counters and convert them into reports for traffic engineers. He developed it when they were both still students at a high school in Seattle. The company was called Traf-o-Data. He had a limited amount of success with the company. Although the venture was not so successful financially, both Gates and Allen considered it a great learning experience. This helped him develop computer programming skills so that he could focus on founding Microsoft. It also gave him an opportunity to develop his business acumen and these skills helped him to make Microsoft a great success.
